The Oxymoron of Academia: How Universities Are Sabotaging Their Own AI Revolution

Picture this: In Indiana’s top research labs, brilliant minds are designing AI systems that can process decades of research in an afternoon, invent new drug compounds, and transform what’s possible for human achievement. But step out of the lab, walk across campus, and you’ll hear professors warning students that using these very same technologies might get them expelled.
This institutional doublethink risks undermining the U.S.’s position in the global AI economy.
The Great Academic Divide (Up Close and Personal)
Let me share two moments from just one semester, Fall 2024, at the same university, in the same public health program.
First, I suggested to a sharp Public Health intern working with Phoenix Paramedic Solutions that she try using Perplexity, a powerful AI research tool, to help build a resource guide. Her immediate reply? “We get expelled if we use AI.” That’s the fear talking... the product of policies that treat AI like contraband rather than a tool.
That same semester, at the same school, I worked side-by-side with another student to build a custom AI marketing tool for a local nonprofit. We trained it to reflect the group’s tone, voice, and style. The result? That tiny, overworked staff could finally focus on what really mattered... meeting with donors, connecting face-to-face with their community, and doing the human work no machine can replace.
Same institution, same field, two wildly different messages about AI. One of fear and prohibition, one of collaboration and empowerment.
The False Choice of “Integrity”
We’ve heard the argument: AI robs students of the struggles that build true understanding. And to be fair, new data is starting to back up at least part of that concern. There’s evidence that over-reliance on AI can contribute to cognitive decline ... that when we let machines do too much of the thinking, our own mental muscles weaken.

But here’s the thing: AI use is inevitable. The genie is out of the bottle. What matters now isn’t whether students use AI , because they do and they will. What matters is how they use it. Our job isn’t to block access. Our job is to teach taste, discernment, and the art of working in human-to-human collaboration, even in an AI-heavy world.
This means guiding students to ask better questions, to critique AI outputs, and to know when to trust a machine’s help and when to lean on their own judgment. It means helping them build the skills that AI can’t replace like emotional intelligence, ethical reasoning, and the ability to work with and inspire other people.
AI can handle the drudgery of citations, formatting, sorting through mountains of data. But if that’s all we train students to use it for, we’ve failed them. The challenge isn’t keeping AI out of the classroom. It’s making sure students use it in ways that sharpen their minds, not dull them.
The Innovation Paradox
The contradiction is stark. Universities pour millions into AI research. They pitch AI breakthroughs to donors and lawmakers. But they tell students that using those same tools in their work makes them cheaters.
It sends a bizarre message... AI is revolutionary, just not for you. And not here.
Meanwhile, the workforce demands exactly the opposite. The most valuable employees will be those who can partner with AI, not those trained to avoid it.
Bright Spots and The Path Forward
Fortunately, some programs are leading the way. We need more initiatives like:
Ivy Tech Community College and the Central Indiana Corporate Partnership’s Applied AI Industry Leadership and Advisory Group, a coalition helping shape AI curriculum and workforce training to match what industries actually need, from healthcare to manufacturing to finance.
The StartEdUp Foundation, a Noblesville nonprofit empowering innovation and entrepreneurship in education and supporting student entrepreneurs. They’re showing what it looks like when AI and creativity go hand-in-hand.
Ohio State University, where AI is being woven into the fabric of every discipline, and Bowling Green State University, which is set to launch six AI-integrated bachelor’s programs. They’re proving that the future isn’t in isolating AI, it’s in infusing it across the board.
This is the kind of leadership we need. Because every semester we delay, we graduate another cohort unprepared for an AI-powered world.
The Bigger Stakes

Let’s be clear, while there is talk of AI revolutionizing the way we deliver education ... for now universities have a stronghold on shaping our future leaders. If we teach them to fear AI or hide its use, we’re setting up our entire society to lag behind in the AI-driven economy.
The Choice Ahead
We can keep pretending that banning AI protects integrity, or we can define true integrity for this moment... teaching students to use AI ethically, critically, and creatively. We can train them to collaborate with machines to solve problems neither could tackle alone.
Indiana’s universities, sitting at the crossroads of AI research and real-world need, are uniquely positioned to lead. But they have to stop fighting the future and start preparing for it.
The AI revolution isn’t coming. It’s here. The only question left is whether our educational institutions will help lead it, or get left behind.
